Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant serves as the system’s primary internal accounting support.

Lorenz Clinic seeks an experienced staff accountant to serve as the system’s primary internal accounting support. This is an exciting opportunity for an accountant to have a leveraged impact on the most pressing social mission of our time—the expansion of access to quality mental health services. The position is full-time, exempt and will be housed at the system’s administrative offices in Victoria, Minnesota.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for financial statement preparation, comparison of actual financial results to the budget, assistance in the budget preparation, and other reporting projects for the clinic system. The Accountant will be responsible for taking on projects and acting as a the primary, in-house resource in healthcare entity accounting expertise.

About the Clinic System

Lorenz Clinic is a privately held, clinician governed mental health system with four satellite offices and nearly 50 employees. Founded by a systems thinker, the clinic is a group practice focused on the mental health needs of children, families, and adults. While the majority of the clinic’s services are provided under the umbrella of managed care, the clinic has cultivated community partnerships that allow it to service those without insurance.

Located on the edge of the Minneapolis Metropolitan area, our four locations (Victoria, Chaska, Prior Lake, and Rosemount) are located approximately 30-35 miles south/southwest of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul and provide needed psychological services to both suburban and rural communities.  In addition to its clinical mission, the clinic has a vibrant clinical training program for emerging psychologists that enlivens work at all levels of the organization.

Distinguishing Features

The Accountant is distinguished from the lower level of billing department staff in that the latter does not have responsibility for accounting, financial statement preparation, or reporting. The Accountant is further distinguished from the COO in that the latter has authority of all financial operations. The CEO has ultimate governance authority over all financial operations.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provides financial information to management by researching and analyzing accounting and other business performance data; preparing reports
  • Ensure accounts are reconciled and reconciling items are resolved in a timely manner.
  • Partner with site leaders and business office staff to coordinate and complete the month end close of the billing system
  • Provide customer services to off-site non-accounting staff by assisting with questions, concerns and training
  • Perform additional assigned responsibilities which could include activities such as maintaining the fixed asset module, bank account reconciliation, foundation accounting, credit card processing, billing expertise, etc.
  • Assist assigned facilities in the preparation of the annual budget including reviewing the proposed budget for reasonableness and verifying the budget has been loaded into the business system properly
  • Monitor actual financial results against budgeted results and notify management of significant variances or spending trends in a timely manner
  • Assist with special projects that may require being part of a cross functional team.
  • Prepares asset, liability, and capital account entries by compiling and analyzing account information
  • Documents financial transactions by entering account information
  • Recommends financial actions by analyzing accounting options
  • Summarizes current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports
  • Substantiates financial transactions by auditing documents
  • Maintains accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures
  • Guides billing office clerical staff by coordinating activities and answering questions
  • Reconciles financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information
  • Secures financial information by completing database backups
  • Maintains financial security by following internal controls
  • Prepares payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements
  • Answers accounting procedure questions by researching and interpreting accounting policy and regulations
  • Complies with federal, state, and local financial legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions
  • Prepares special financial reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing account information and trends
  • Maintains customer and shareholder confidence and protects operations by keeping financial information confidential
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of performing accounting functions effectively, productively, and with high ethical standards
  • Cooperative work attitude toward management facility staff, patients, visitors, clinicians, and providers
  • Ability to promote favorable facility image with providers, clinicians, patients, insurance companies, referral sources, vendors, creditors, other business associates, and general public
  • Ability to lead accounting staff in making ethically appropriate decisions and solve problems
  • Ability and willingness to take on additional projects and tasks

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in tax, accounting, or finance
  • Certified Public Accountant (preferred)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in accounting/finance
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with QuickBooks
  • Experience with financial reporting requirements
  • Experience in working with multiple legal entities under different legal umbrellas
